According to Football London, Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta and technical director Edu are in advanced discussions about the squad for next season.
The Gunners are currently ninth in the table, 10 points behind fourth-place West Ham United. Our performances this season have been woeful to say the least, and fans are hoping for a big rebuild in the upcoming summer window.
However, if the report is to be believed, Arteta only wants to strengthen three positions on the pitch – left-back, right-back and signing Martin Odegaard on a permanent deal from Real Madrid.
Kieran Tierney is our undisputed number one at left full-back, but the Scotsman has no natural backup. His injury concerns make that position an important one, and Arteta is right to bring someone in to provide adequate cover.
On the opposite side, Hector Bellerin is expected by many to leave the club. The Spaniard hasn’t played a single minute in the Premier League since the start of last month, and he will likely move on at the end of this season.
A replacement for Bellerin is an absolute necessity. Calum Chambers and Cedric Soares have both done well there, but if Arsenal want to compete with the best teams in the country, they will need someone much better.
A permanent move for Odegaard is a no-brainer. He has been absolutely brilliant for us ever since he joined, and if Real Madrid are open to selling him, we should do everything we possibly can to get him this summer.
Arteta is right to target those three positions. However, is the Arsenal boss ignoring another very important area of the pitch?
Arsenal need a central midfielder
With Dani Ceballos returning to Real Madrid and with Ainsley Maitland-Niles, Joe Willock, Lucas Torreira and Matteo Guendouzi’s futures up in the air, Arsenal will be left with just Granit Xhaka, Thomas Partey and Mohamed Elneny in the middle of the park.
It would be really silly to go into a season with just three experienced central midfielders. Arteta should make signing a new number six a priority this summer – more so than the two full-back positions.
Brighton star Yves Bissouma would be many Arsenal fans’ dream signing. Hopefully, Arteta and Edu can get that deal done this summer.
