According to a report from The Athletic, Arsenal have received an offer from Everton for Ainsley Maitland-Niles ahead of tomorrow’s transfer deadline.
The versatile Englishman spent the second half of last season on loan at West Brom. He has made it absolutely clear to everyone that he only wants to play in central midfield – a position he cannot make his own at Arsenal.
Mikel Arteta really appreciates Maitland-Niles but he sees the Englishman as more of a full-back. That has forced the Gunners to put him on the market and Everton have come in with an interesting offer to sign him.
Everton enter talks with Arsenal to sign Maitland-Niles
Everton are on the market looking to strengthen their squad and Rafa Benitez views Maitland-Niles as a very good option in numerous positions. As a result, the Toffees have tabled their opening offer to sign the Englishman.
The report claims that Arsenal have received a season-long loan offer with an option to buy clause inserted in the deal.
The Gunners are yet to respond to the bid but are reportedly considering it behind the scenes. The Toffees can expect a response in the coming hours, but will it be a yes from the Edu and Arteta? Only time will tell.
The Insider’s View:
We all knew that there would be a late low-ball offer of some sort for Maitland-Niles and here’s Everton with their bid. From their perspective, it’s probably a fair proposal considering that the Englishman will get little to no game time at the Emirates.
However, it makes no sense for Arsenal to accept this deal. If the Toffees come in with a decent-sized bid to sign him permanently, it would be something to think about, but it would be really silly to loan out somebody who has less than two years left on their contract.
Keeping hold of Maitland-Niles, a player labelled as ‘fantastic‘ by Peter Crouch, would not be a bad idea. We have no fixed option at right-back at the moment and if Arteta cans somehow convince the Englishman to do a job there, he could well revive his Arsenal career.
