According to a report from The Daily Mail, Arsenal are interested in signing Derby County left-back Lee Buchanan this summer.
The Gunners are on the market looking for a backup left-back. Sead Kolasinac left on loan in January and it is almost certain that he will leave on a permanent deal in the upcoming summer transfer window.
Kieran Tierney is our only natural left-back at the moment. The Scotsman is undoubtedly one of the best in his position in the Premier League, but he is having a really difficult time with injuries, and that is a big problem for Arsenal.
Cedric Soares has featured there this season and although the Portuguese international has done fairly well, him being right-footed causes a slight imbalance. Granit Xhaka has been preferred there in recent weeks and he has done very well, but it’s still not ideal.
Arsenal will have to bring in a new left-back this summer and Buchanan would be a very interesting signing. The 20-year-old has played 36 times in all competitions this season – both at left full-back as well as further ahead at left midfield.
Derby boss Wayne Rooney is a huge fan of him as well. The legendary Englishman has been watching him very closely everyday over the last few months, and if his words are anything to go by, Arsenal really should make a move for the young full-back this summer.
Rooney said about Buchanan: “He’s a top, top player. I’d argue he’s one of the best young left-backs in the country. And he can go to another level as well….no….he’s a real top player.” (Mail)
The Insider’s View:
Rooney’s praise for Buchanan shows just how highly he rates the young Englishman. The 20-year-old has all the qualities to succeed at the top level, and if Arsenal really want him, it should be a fairly straightforward deal.
Buchanan will enter the final year of his contract this summer. His market value isn’t really high at the moment either, which means that Arsenal, or any other interested club, can sign him for a very small fee.
The youngster’s quality at just 20 years of age combined with his versatility can be a huge asset for Arsenal. His lack of experience at the top level is a concern, but he will only be a backup to Tierney, and that should give him all the time he needs to settle in.
