German outlet Sport Bild have claimed this week that Arsenal are interested in signing RB Leipzig’s Christopher Nkunku.

The January transfer window is less than two months away and the rumour mill is starting to gain pace. Arsenal had a fantastic summer transfer window, but there still are holes that Mikel Arteta needs to fill.

A creative midfielder has to be the number one priority. Arsenal have been woeful in the attacking third, and Mesut Ozil’s omission from the squad is not doing anyone any favours at this moment.

Arsenal need a new attacking midfielder in January or in the summer, and Nkunku is a very interesting option. We were heavily linked with a move for the Frenchman when Unai Emery was at the helm last year. (Standard)

That move didn’t materialise then and Nkunku moved to RB Leipzig instead, where he has been a huge hit.

Nkunku is exactly what we need

The 22-year-old scored five goals and provided 16 assists in all competitions in his debut season in Germany. The former PSG man has a goal and three assists in eight starts so far this season, which is a very decent record.

However, the biggest thing that stands out about Nkunku is his creativity. He ranks third in the Bundesliga’s charts for most key passes this term – higher than the likes of Serge Gnabry, Leroy Sane and Jadon Sancho. (WhoScored)

Nkunku is also hugely versatile. The Frenchman is capable of playing on both flanks, as a number 10 and also as a box to box midfielder. His attacking output is far better than any Arsenal midfielder since the start of last season, which makes a move for him a no-brainer.

However, he will not be cheap. The report claims that Leipzig value him in the region of £36 million (€40million), which might prove to be too expensive for Arsenal who forked out over £45 million (BBC) in one go to sign Thomas Partey not too long ago.

It will be interesting to see if Arsenal try to sign anyone in January. We certainly need a new number 10, and if it can be Nkunku, it will be another great signing by Edu and Arteta.
