Report: Arsenal have made a move to sign 'the new Mesut Ozil'; Edu can get him for free

Arsenal went above and beyond to get rid of Mesut Ozil in January. The German was pushed away from the squad by Mikel Arteta, and Edu had to negotiate a deal to terminate his contract earlier this year.

The Gunners then signed Martin Odegaard from Real Madrid on loan as a replacement to Ozil. The Norwegian is very similar in style to the German World Cup winner, and he has the potential to become even better in the coming years.

Arsenal have found the perfect heir to Ozil’s throne but he will be on his way back to Madrid this summer. Nobody knows what the Galacticos will decide at the end of the season, and if things go south on the pitch in the next two months, we might not even be able to afford Odegaard.

Arteta and Edu are lining up alternatives to Odegaard ahead of this summer’s transfer window. One such player is AC Milan star Hakan Calhanoglu – a player who was once dubbed as ‘the new Mesut Ozil’. (Goal)

Sky Sports in Italy claimed last night that Arsenal and Chelsea had both approached the Turk’s agent over a potential deal this summer.

Calhanoglu has just a few months left on his contract. He will be available for free this summer, and that works out very well for Arsenal, who will not have a lot of money to spend if we miss out on European football.

The Insider’s View:

Calhanoglu, 27, is in his prime. He has been around the block for a number of years now and he has the experience of playing at the top level.

The Turk has scored seven goals and has provided 11 assists in all competitions this season. That is a phenomenal record and Arsenal could really use someone who is capable of scoring regularly from attacking midfield.

The priority simply has to be Odegaard this summer. However, if we can’t get that done and if we don’t have the money to sign someone of the same quality, a move to bring in Calhanoglu on a free transfer wouldn’t be a bad idea at all.
