Report: Arsenal-linked attacking midfielder ruled out for four months ahead of January window

The Daily Mail claimed on Tuesday that Arsenal are considering a move for Barcelona star Philippe Coutinho. The former Liverpool man was viewed as the solution to our creativity problems, but that option is out of the window now.

Coutinho suffered a terrible knee injury in Barca’s last La Liga game against Eibar. It looked bad when it happened, but fresh reports claim that the Brazilian is set for a long spell on the sidelines.

Spanish outlet AS claim today that Coutinho has suffered serious damage to the external meniscus of his left knee. It is claimed that a surgery is needed to overcome that problem and a period of four months is set for his recovery.

That ruins all of Arsenal’s plans if we really were interested in him. Coutinho was heavily linked with a move to the Emirates in the summer and his affiliation with super-agent and Edu’s close pal Kia Joorabchian fueled those rumours even more.

Edu and Arteta now need to reassess their options. Coutinho would certainly have been a very good signing. He showed during his time at Liverpool that he has the quality to be one of the best attackers in the Premier League, but sadly, a return to England just isn’t happening for him.

Who should Arsenal sign now?

Coutinho’s injury is a real blow, especially after what happened in our pursuit of Dominik Szoboszlai. The Hungarian was heavily linked with a move to Arsenal, but RB Leipzig leapt ahead of us to seal the deal.

Houssem Aouar is still reportedly our priority target and he would be the dream signing. However, Lyon are unlikely to entertain any offers mid-season and it looks we have blown our chance of landing him.

Borussia Dortmund star Julian Brandt is also reportedly an option. (The Athletic) The German would arguably be the perfect player for Arteta’s system. He can play across the front three, as a number 10 and also a box-to-box midfielder.

However, Dortmund – like Lyon – will do everything they can to hold onto him in January, and the fact that he has over three years left on his contract puts them in a very strong position.

Edu has a lot to do in the coming days, and if he fails, we will not succeed this season.
