Arsenal have been linked with a whole host of players ahead of the summer transfer window. The latest name to come out of the rumour mill is versatile Sporting Lisbon star Pedro Goncalves.

Eurosport revealed over the weekend that the 22-year-old, dubbed the new Bruno Fernandes, is on Arsenal’s radar as Edu and Mikel Arteta are lining up replacements for Martin Odegaard this summer.

The Norwegian is our number one target. Arsenal are expected to do everything possible to get Odegaard this summer, but if we can’t, Goncalves is on the list of possible alternatives.

Portuguese outlet A Bola have backed the claims about Arsenal’s reported interest in the versatile attacker. The report claims that Sporting will make it extremely difficult for interested parties to sign him in the upcoming window.

Goncalves has a mammoth £51.7 million buyout clause inserted in his contract. Sporting are expected to demand the full amount to part ways with their star player, and even if they budge on the fee, it won’t be by much.

The 22-year-old’s numbers show exactly why he is so highly rated. He has scored 15 goals and has provided five assists in all competitions this season, and it won’t be a surprise to see a number of big clubs join the race for him in the coming months.

The Insider’s View:

Dubbed the new Bruno Fernandes, Goncalves is certainly one to keep an eye on. The 22-year-old is among the best players in the Portuguese top-flight, and his versatility is one of the biggest reasons why he is so highly rated.

This season, Goncalves has played in five different positions for Sporting. He has played on both wings, in central midfield, as a number 10 and also a centre-forward. That would give plenty of options to a manager, and that’s probably why Arsenal are considering a move for him.

Odegaard has to be the priority and we should do everything possible to get him. However, if that deal cannot be completed, a move for Goncalves – if he is available for a lot lesser than his release clause – would be a very good option.
