It has been over four months since The Telegraph first reported that Arsenal are interested in signing Atletico Madrid’s Thomas Partey. The Ghanian has been reported by many as Mikel Arteta’s priority summer target, but things are still the same as they were back in May.
Diego Simeone’s side want to keep hold of Partey but the midfielder has rejected their latest contract offer. The Ghanaian will not force a move away from Madrid, and Atleti will not let him leave for anything less than his release clause of £45 million.
That has been the biggest stumbling block for Arsenal in our pursuit of Partey. We need to move players on before we can trigger his release clause, but that hasn’t happened yet. Emi Martinez’s £17 million move to Aston Villa has been our biggest sale so far this summer. (BBC)
Arsenal have placed Lucas Torreria and Matteo Guendouzi on the transfer list. The former could return to Italy for a decent fee in the coming weeks but Arsenal are struggling to get rid of the latter.
Atleti are confident that Partey will stay
Atletico Madrid seem to have kept a close eye on what is happening at Arsenal. They know very well that we cannot afford to trigger Partey’s clause as of this moment, and Mundo Deportivo claim that they are confident of keeping hold of their star midfielder as a result.
Inter Milan are also reportedly interested in signing the Ghanaian this summer. However, they will only make a move for Partey if they fail to sign Chelsea’s N’Golo Kante before the transfer window ends in less than three weeks time.
Atletico are still wary of the fact that Arsenal or Inter could make a late move for Partey. If we can raise funds in the next two weeks, we will be able to trigger his release clause. However, it looks unlikely at this stage, and Simeone is preparing for the new season with the midfielder very much a part of his plans.
