According to a report from CBS Sports, representatives of Arsenal star David Luiz have initiated contacts with potential suitors for the Brazilian’s signature when his contract runs out this summer.
Luiz’s future is up in the air despite being Arsenal’s most important centre-half at the moment. His latest injury is a massive blow for us ahead of our season-defining game against Villarreal on Thursday, and his fitness issues this term may well be the reason why Mikel Arteta hasn’t extended his deal yet.
The Arsenal boss has constantly claimed that no decision will be taken until the end of the season. We are pretty close to that point now, and the fact that Luiz’s representatives are looking elsewhere could only mean one thing.
The Brazilian’s agent, Kia Joorabchian, is very close to Arsenal technical director Edu. They have worked together to get multiple deals over the line in the last two years, and the fact that he is in contact with other clubs now should mean that he knows that Luiz will not be given a new contract.
The report claims that an American club is interested while Serie A giants Lazio are also eyeing a move for the former Chelsea man who Pep Guardiola thinks is an ‘exceptional player with incredible mentality’. (AS)
It will be interesting to see how this pans out. Luiz seems happy at the Emirates at the moment, but if he can’t come to an agreement over some sort of a deal with Arsenal, he will have no choice but to move on next month.
The Insider’s View:
If the Brazilian was fit all season, there is absolutely no doubt that Arteta would’ve extended his contract by now. The Arsenal boss is a big fan of the work Luiz does – both on and off the pitch, especially with the younger players.
Sadly for the Brazilian, he has had a torrid time with injuries this term. His clash of heads with Raul Jimenez was a terrible one, while the knee problem he picked up in training during the last international break was unfortunate as well.
The hamstring injury he suffered on Sunday was the rotten cherry on top. It looked like his season was over at that point, but thankfully, he is expected to return in the very near future.
If Arsenal can scrape through to the final of the Europa League and if Luiz can return and display an excellent performance there, Arteta may well decide to keep him at the club.
Those are a lot of ‘if’s’ at this point, which is probably why his agents are considering other options.
