Arsenal were dealt a huge blow yesterday as Real Sociedad confirmed that Alexander Isak had signed a new five-year contract.

The Athletic revealed last month that the Gunners are very interested in the Swedish striker’s services. That report was later backed by Cadena Ser, who claimed that Arsenal have even held talks with Isak’s agents over a summer move.

The 21-year-old had a stunning campaign in La Liga last season. He scored 17 goals for Sociedad and a big move is just around the corner for him. Arsenal are very keen but the £60 million release clause he had in his contract before he signed this new deal was reportedly proving to be a huge stumbling block.

If that was a problem then, his new price tag makes it almost impossible for us to sign him now.

Alexander Isak could now cost Arsenal £77.5m

El Desmarque revealed yesterday that Isak’s release clause has now gone up considerably thanks to his new deal. A club that wants him now will have to fork out a staggering €90 million (£77.5m) for his signature, which is an outrageous amount in today’s market.

Borussia Dortmund had an option to buy Isak back for less than half of that fee, but Sociedad confirmed yesterday that they have bought that clause out.

That means the only way the Swede will leave this summer is if a club can meet the Spanish side’s demands, which is very unlikely, especially for Arsenal.

The Insider’s View:

Arsenal will need a new striker this summer if Alexandre Lacazette and Eddie Nketiah leave the club. The latter is almost guaranteed to depart, while there’s a good chance that the Frenchman will be sold as well.

The Gunners will then be left with just Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang as our accomplished striker. Gabriel Martinelli and Folarin Balogun will give Mikel Arteta some options, but all three of them are fairly similar, and that’s not ideal at all.

A player like Isak would be absolutely incredible for Arsenal. He can hold the ball up, is good in the air and is a fantastic finisher as well. He is everything Arsenal need up front at the moment, but sadly, a move for him is next to impossible this summer.
