Transfer deadline day always throws up a surprise or two.

Indeed, shock signings can often come from out of nowhere in the final hours of the transfer window, and on this deadline day, Arsenal have been linked with a potentially huge addition.

Sandro Tonali has been linked to Arsenal, and that would be a blockbuster signing to say the least.

There’s plenty of reason to be excited by the idea of Sandro Tonali arriving, that’s for sure.

However, speaking on Sky Sports, Jody Morris has shared his verdict on Tonali potentially coming to Arsenal, and he says he’s baffled by this rumour.

Morris shared his instant reaction after hearing Tonali linked with a move to Arsenal.

The pundit says that he doesn’t see how Tonali fits into this Arsenal side, noting that Declan Rice and Martin Zubimendi would both start over Tonali.

Morris noted that Arsenal need more creativity in the midfield, rather than a player like Tonali.

“Yeah, I don’t see that at all. Even from Arsenal’s point of view, I mean, for starters, he’s been great for Newcastle since he’s come back from his ban,” Morris said.

“Pivotal for whatever they’re doing up there in the north, but for Arsenal, where did he get in? Like, he’s not going to play ahead of Declan Rice or Zubimendi?

“Is he the type of midfielder that they’re looking for? For me, I think Arsenal need to add goals in their outfield players. Not getting enough from people like Odegaard at the moment. Eze’s on the bench. I just, I don’t see it. Is he a good player? Yes. Top player for Newcastle. Does he get in Arsenal’s team? I’m not sure.”

Morris says that a move for Tonali doesn’t make sense, and he does have a point.

Yes, Mikel Merino’s injury is a blow for Arsenal’s midfield depth, but that injury shouldn’t necessarily lead to a massive money move for a replacement.

As Morris says, Zubimendi and Rice will be Arsenal’s first-choice midfield pairing for a long time yet, and they have plenty of depth beyond those two in any case.

Tonali to Arsenal would be an exciting move, but in terms of squad composition and finances, it’s hard to see a deal being done.
