Jermaine Pennant has claimed that Arsenal target Douglas Luiz is a better player than Declan Rice.

We’re at the stage of the season where wild, ridiculous claims surface from all corners of the globe, and we’ve just stumbled onto one from former Arsenal winger Pennant. Let us tell you what he said.

Despite signing Declan Rice in the summer, Arsenal are expected to be on the market for a new midfielder in January, and Douglas Luiz has been heavily linked.

The Aston Villa midfielder is a wonderful player. He has been of interest to us in the past as well, and he is now our priority target for the winter window.

The Brazilian would fit our system very well. He is good on the ball, great off it, and has the ability to chip in with goals and assists too. He really is a quality player, but Pennant got a little carried away while praising him.

The retired winger claimed that he would rather have Luiz in his side than Rice.

He said on talkSPORT: “Any team would dream to have Rice, but there are better sixes in the Premier League at the moment.

“I would say Douglas Luiz of Aston Villa, I think he can do everything that Rice can do and better. I think he assists more, he chips in with goals more than Rice. Creativity wise, he’s better, flair is better, he can put in a tackle just like Rice, break up play just like Rice.

“So I think if someone said to me you can have Douglas Luiz for £60m or Declan Rice for £100m, easy every day of the week, Douglas Luiz.”

We have to give credit where credit’s due – Douglas Luiz is a fantastic player.

The £60 million Aston Villa man has always been impressive in the Premier League, but he has taken his game to a whole new level since Unai Emery arrived at Villa Park. We would gladly take him at Arsenal.

However, to even suggest that Luiz is close to Declan Rice’s level is just ridiculous. The Arsenal man is arguably the best midfielder in the Premier League, and he is head and shoulders above the Aston Villa midfielder. It’s not even close.

We don’t know what Pennant was thinking when he made the above claim, but we’re sure almost everyone else will agree that he is wrong.
