Arsenal’s technical director Edu Gaspar spoke to The Daily Mail about his side’s plans for the January transfer window.
The Gunners are desperate for help at the moment. We have won just four games in the league this season, and if our terrible form continues, we will be in the bottom three by this time next week.
The January transfer window is viewed by many as the perfect opportunity to rescue our season. One or two top-quality signings could change our fortunes, but Edu’s comments hint that he prefers fixing things on the inside instead of bringing someone in to do the same.
He said: “Why we don’t talk about something externally. We are here to solve the problem. We have the team, we have the squad, we have the manager, we have the staff, everyone in the right place to change it.”
“Why people have to expect a magician to go “boom! Come here, Messi!’ No. It depends on us. No, we have to take this responsibility, it’s not about me, not about Mikel, it’s our responsibility to change it.”
“People might start to ask: ‘what are you going to do in the winter window?’. Of course, we will try to do something but, listen, we have the responsibility to change it. Don’t wait for someone outside to come inside and be a magician because that’s not going to happen.”
Edu sounds a bit like Arsene Wenger
Edu’s comments seem way too familiar. Arsene Wenger used to say similar things just before the January transfer window, and we were often left disappointed by our activity in the following month.
The January window is an extremely difficult market to get deals done. Arsenal might have to overpay next month to get a few transfers over the line – something we have been hesitant to do over the years.
Edu, however, has admitted that Arsenal will try to do something. A new creative midfielder has to be a priority, and that player has to come in and hit the ground running to help us rescue what has been a disastrous season so far.
