The Insider's View: How Arsenal can use Willian to sign £69m South American star

The summer transfer window is fast approaching and the rumour mill is beginning to gain pace. The surprise name Arsenal have been linked with this week is Real Betis star Guido Rodriguez. (Read full story here)

The Argentine international’s value has shot up after a bunch of incredible performances in La Liga. Rodriguez is expected to move on in the summer and Betis are open to selling him for big money to balance their own books.

The former Club America star has a release clause worth about £69 million. That is a lot of money for someone who has only been in Europe for a little over a year, and many expected that fee to put Arsenal off.

However, there is a good chance Betis will accept a lot lesser, and if Arsenal and Edu are smart about it, they could bring down that price even more by offering the Verdiblancos a player they were looking at in exchange.

Willian-Rodriguez swap deal is a possibility

El Gol Digital reported before the January transfer window that Real Betis are looking to replace their skipper and club legend Joaquin. The 29-year-old is expected to hang up his boots at the end of this season, and Manuel Pellegrini wants an experienced head to come in and take his place.

The report claimed that Arsenal winger Willian was one of the players they were looking at.

The former Chelsea man has had a shocking season since joining us. Everything he tried to do, failed, and although his performances have improved considerably over the last few weeks, it still doesn’t warrant the massive wages we’re paying him.

Now that Arsenal are looking at Rodriguez at a time when our own finances don’t look strong, some sort of deal that would see Willian go the other way could be a serious option to consider this summer.

However, the biggest problem Arsenal will face is Willian’s exorbitant wages. There’s no way Betis will be able to afford his salary, but Edu is a smart guy, and there’s no reason why he can’t work out a deal that would suit all parties involved.
