Bayern Munich defender Alphonso Davies will be on the move next summer.
Arsenal will be on high alert, knowing that Alphonso Davies is set to become a free agent next year.
The Gunners have proven themselves adept at picking up bargains in the market in recent transfer windows.
Most recently, sporting director Edu Gaspar negotiated a smart deal for Raheem Sterling, allowing the North London club to sign the 29-year-old winger on a temporary basis without having to pay a loan fee and with Chelsea still paying more than half of his wages.
Edu and Mikel Arteta will be constantly on the lookout for means of improving the Arsenal squad in cost effective ways. This will include keeping tabs on the free agent market.
Davies will be in high demand when his contact with Bayern Munich expires. As reported by the BBC, Real Madrid are currently the favourites to secure his services.
However, until the 23-year-old left-back officially signs for a new club, his options shall remain open.
Alphonso Davies ready for Arsenal approach
According to sources speaking exclusively to Arsenal Insider, Davies’ representatives are expecting the Gunners to make an approach for the 53-cap Canada international’s signature next summer.
In fact, they are prepared to hear from all major clubs, both from the Premier League and across Europe.
The opportunity to sign a players of Davies’ quality, at his current age, on a free transfer is exceedingly rare, and will likely spark a frenetic race for his services.
Do Arsenal need Alphonso Davies?
A player with the Canadian’s pedigree would improve practically any squad. However, the left-back position is one in which the Gunners are currently particularly well-stocked.
This season, summer signing Riccardo Calafiori, Oleksandr Zinchenko, Jurrien Timber, Jakub Kiwior, and Takehiro Tomiyasu will all be vying for game time in the role.
Even Kieran Tierney is still on the books at the Emirates Stadium.
On top of that, whilst Davies is set to nominally become available on a free transfer, that isn’t to say he’ll come cheaply. He would still demand high wages and a hefty signing bonus. There is an argument that, even for a player of such quality and potential, Arsenal ought not invest so heavily in that part of the pitch in the near future.
However, there could be exits in the interim that create space for Davies in North London. Kiwior could leave Arsenal if he doesn’t start getting more regular game time soon, for instance.
