Why you can’t ‘completely rule Arsenal out’ of the race for Kylian Mbappe in 2024

Arsenal are still reportedly very much in the race for the signature of PSG superstar Kylian Mbappe.

It is not a secret that Arsenal are on the lookout for new attacking acquisitions, and have some high profile names on their shortlist. However, the capture of Kylian Mbappe would blow anything else out of the water.

The Frenchman is arguably the best player in the world right now. The 24-year-old is an extraordinary attacking force, who has already racked up an astonishing 261 goals at club level in his career so far. He has also netted 46 times for his country and has 75 caps and a World Cup winner’s medal to his name.

It would be an extraordinary feat if Arsenal were to tempt Mbappe to the Emirates Stadium. He would have a seismic impact at the club. However, the Gunners are far from being the favourites for his signature.

With the attacker’s future at PSG in doubt, Real Madrid appear to be the frontrunners in the race to secure his services, as reported by Goal.

Could Arsenal really sign Kylian Mbappe?

That being said, Arsenal’s chances of signing the player ought not to be dismissed out of hand. According to French football expert Jonathan Johnson, as quoted by CaughtOffside, “Arsenal are an attractive project now, and I think if an offer was there and Real Madrid took themselves out of the equation, then Mbappe would give it serious consideration.”

“I wouldn’t completely rule Arsenal out, and the same goes for Liverpool, but I think those teams would be a distant second to Real Madrid, and it’s also not the case at this moment in time that he’s definitely decided he’s done and dusted with PSG either.”

“A lot can change in the coming weeks and months, but I think the next key step is to see how Real Madrid approach this deal. Let’s see how they make their next charm-offensive, and what that could mean in terms of Arsenal or Liverpool becoming more serious destinations for Mbappe.”

Whatever Mbappe’s future may hold, this saga is likely to rumble on and on for some time yet. Arsenal fans would be wise not to get their hopes up too much. It is hard to resist pondering how well Mbappe would link up with the likes of Bukayo Saka, Martin Odegaard, Gabriel Martinelli, and Gabriel Jesus, though. The thought of seeing him strut his stuff in the Premier League is also a tantalising prospect.

The financial aspect of such a deal would also stretch the limits of what Arsenal could afford. Mbappe currently earns £888,000-per-week. A salary of even half that would decimate the Gunners’ current wage structure.

It is highly likely that Arsenal will end up having to focus their efforts on alternative targets. In the meantime, though, Mikel Arteta and Edu will surely be doing all he can to evaluate to actual viability of bringing Mbappe to the club.
