Arsenal’s Hale End academy has provided plenty of hope for fans over the years, with yet more expected in the future in the form of Max Dowman.

The youngster will be looking to replicate the likes of Bukayo Saka, Ethan Nwaneri and Myles Lewis-Skelly, who have managed to come through the ranks to make a big impact on the senior team.

At just 15 years old, Max Dowman has already been heavily involved in first-team training, despite not being able to make his debut this season.

The star will be eligible to play for Arsenal as of next campaign, with Mikel Arteta already hinting at the possibility that he would’ve been handed some minutes already if he was able to.

However, the path ahead for the attacking midfielder could be a little less rapid than some people may expect.

Max Dowman may follow Ethan Nwaneri path to Arsenal first-team

The Arsenal academy continues to produce fantastic talent that is having an impact on the first-team, with both Nwaneri and Lewis-Skelly leaving their mark on the side this season.

While Lewis-Skelly was touted as a promising option, his rise to the team has seen him adopt an unfamiliar position at left-back, though he has done so well.

As for Nwaneri, his push to the senior team has been touted for some time, following on from becoming one of Arsenal’s youngest-ever players – aged just 15 when he made his debut against Brentford in 2022.

Even now, just 17 years old, the forward is scoring some great goals in what is proving to be a breakout season.

It has been a few years in the making, but one that has required patience and hard work, despite the clamour for some minutes.

Speaking to the press earlier this season about his development, Arteta said: “The biggest thing is to push him and then when he is pushing you grab him from behind to make sure he is stable and protected. This talent you have to push him.

“Protection is necessary, keeping an eye on him, but he needs to see that he can go and fly and not cut his wings.

“I can talk about how good he is right now and the position he is at, at one of the biggest clubs in Europe, sums up really well the level he has.

“What happens in the future is going to depend on him and how much he wants it. At the moment he wants it a lot and he is surrounded by the right people.

“The crystal ball to see what he is going to be in two or three years, no. My prediction is going to be very positive.”

That protection has helped Nwaneri get to where he is now, while there is still plenty of growth to come from him.

The route there could well be replicated by Arteta when it comes to dealing with the progression of Dowman in the years ahead.

When Mikel Arteta could hand Arsenal debut to Max Dowman

As it stands, Premier League rules dictate that Dowman cannot make his debut until the start of the 2025/26 season.

It means the youngster can’t be involved in a matchday squad for another few months, but could get that introduction once the new campaign rolls around.

While Arteta has shown he isn’t scared to hand a debut to a starlet of his age, there has been more caution about how quickly he hands over regular minutes.

There will be a lot for Dowman and anyone of his age group to adjust to in terms of the pressure and the routines for each match.

Something as simple as integrating into the group with experienced professionals can be a challenge that isn’t seen on the pitch.

However, there is clearly lots of belief in him, as Arteta said earlier this year: “Very impressive. Some of the things he [Dowman] does are unbelievable.

“We have a lot of belief we can develop him into one of our own. There are a lot of restrictions for his age so we will have to wait and see. He is taking fast steps.”

Those fast steps could follow in the months ahead, but it’s clear from the blueprint Arteta put together for Nwaneri that it could still be a waiting game.
