Arsenal fans have been waiting for a new striker all summer.
The Gunners have been in need of a goalscorer for a few years now, and Andrea Berta’s priority following his arrival was to bring in a prolific number nine.
Viktor Gyokeres looks like he will be the one, but Arsenal are not happy with the way Sporting are dragging this deal on with their demands.
The Swede is still expected to arrive, but before that happens, it looks like Arsenal will sign another striker – for their academy.
Arsenal have won the race for Will Wright
Arsenal have been interested in signing Will Wright from Salford City in recent days.
The Gunners have been working really hard to improve their academy. Per Mertesacker, who is the head of the club’s youth setup, has been the driving force behind the success over theIR last few years.
The Athletic revealed that the big German has been driving Arsenal’s recruitment of elite young players behind the scenes, and he has found his next gem.
Much to David Beckham and Gary Neville’s delight, Arsenal have beaten Liverpool in the race to sign Wright from Salford.
Fabrizio Romano revealed on Friday morning that Arsenal have ‘won the race’ for the highly rated young striker after beating several clubs in the race.
Now, the formalities have begun to complete the deal.
Romano said: “Arsenal have agreed a deal to sign 17-year-old talented striker Will Wright, documents being prepared.
“Arsenal won the race despite interest from several clubs.”
Will Wright will replace a big-name youngster in Arsenal’s academy
The Arsenal academy has been producing one incredible talent after another over the last few years.
However, the Gunners lost Chido Obi Martin to Manchester United after he broke all sorts of records at youth level while playing for the Gunners.
That was viewed as a big blow at the time, but Wright can replace the Manchester United youngster in the academy this summer.
The 17-year-old scored over 40 goals for Salford’s youth side last season and even made his senior debut for them.
It is unlikely that he will be a part of the Arsenal first team anytime soon, but we’re convinced he will develop really well in the academy in the upcoming season
