Sky Sports claimed yesterday that Willian has agreed to terminate his Arsenal contract and he will be heading to Brazil to join Corinthians before the window shuts on Tuesday.
The Brazilian joined us from Chelsea on a free transfer last summer. His experience and knowledge of the Premier League made everyone believe that he would hit the ground running, but that didn’t quite happen.
Willian struggled throughout the campaign, scoring just once in all competitions. It just didn’t work out for him at the Emirates and it’s the best thing for all parties that he is moving on.
Willian terminates his contract without a pay-off
Since the turn of the year, Edu has negotiated deals to terminate the contracts of Mesut Ozil, Shkodran Mustafi and Sokratis Papastathopoulos. Every single one of them was paid some sort of compensation to leave the club.
Every Arsenal fan believed that it would be the same story with Willian, but the Brazilian has turned out to be completely different. The report claims that the former Chelsea man has ripped up his contract and has waived off every penny that we owed him.
Arsenal directors are reportedly ‘amazed’ by this incredible gesture from Willian, who has been accused by some fans, pundits and the media of just staying at the Emirates for financial gains.
Fair play, Willian
No player in the Premier League was criticised more than Willian last season. His poor performances were ridiculed time and again by sections of the media and he was hammered for earning mammoth wages.
Some people just forgot that he’s just another human being who was trying his best to succeed. It just didn’t happen for him at Arsenal, and some of the vile abuse he received on a daily basis is just unacceptable.
Willian’s latest gesture has proved that he wasn’t in it for the money. He has given up a staggering £20 million and has reportedly accepted a 70 per cent pay cut to join Corinthians. We can only thank him for this and wish him well as he embarks on an interesting journey back home in Brazil.
