Report: 23-year-old rock compared to PL legend Arsenal’s main summer priority for this position

Brighton and Hove Albion and England defender Ben White is reportedly a defensive priority for Arsenal this summer.

According to the Athletic, the 23-year-old centre-back will be pursued by the Gunners this summer. Jules Kounde remains an option for Arsenal, but a lack of UEFA Champions League football will make a deal hard to complete.

The Daily Mail report that White would cost Arsenal £50m following a breakout year in the Premier League.

White is a target for Arsenal this summer

The England international was key to Graham Potter’s side retaining their position in the Premier League. The former Leeds United loanee is a target for multiple teams in the division. The youngster has been compared to former Premier League icon Rio Ferdinand as per the Yorkshire Evening Post.

Arsenal are not short of centre-backs even with the departure of David Luiz this summer. William Saliba will be evaluated in pre-season, whilst the future of Konstantinos Mavropanos is unknown after returning from VfB Stuttgart.

Despite finishing eighth in the Premier League last season, the Gunners were surprisingly sturdy in the defence. Arsenal conceded just 39 goals in the division, less than the likes of Liverpool, Leicester City and Tottenham.

With Rob Holding signing a new long-term contract last year and the likes of Gabriel and Pablo Mari impressing last season, centre-back is a position Arsenal need to worry little about this summer. This is what makes these links to White extremely weird.

There’s no doubt that the Brighton defender is a top player who could one day flourish into a class centre-back for one of England’s best teams. But with Arsenal stacked at the back and having two promising centre-backs in Saliba and Mavropanos, signing White makes next to sense for Mikel Arteta.

Add in his £50m price tag when positions such as right-back, central midfield and attacking midfield are in desperate need of improving, Arsenal signing White would not make the Gunners a better squad from last season.
