Arsenal have been heavily linked with a move to sign Olympique Lyon midfielder Lucas Paqueta over the last few weeks, and a report from Brazil has now revealed why the Gunners haven’t lodged a bid just yet.

It is no secret that Mikel Arteta is on the lookout for another midfielder. Youri Tielemans has been heavily linked with a move to the Emirates, and he seems a natural fit for our number eight role.

However, the Paqueta links have led us to believe that Arsenal are looking for someone a lot more attack-minded, and the Brazil international really is a fantastic player.

Two reasons why Arsenal haven’t bid for Lucas Paqueta yet

Brazilian outlet UOL have revealed the latest on Paqueta amid rumours linking the talented midfielder with a move to Arsenal in this summer’s transfer window.

The report claims that the Gunners are the main candidates for Paqueta and his name has already been approved by Arteta. Talks between the two clubs are said to be ongoing, but Arsenal haven’t made an official bid for the Lyon man just yet – for two simple reasons.

The outlet reveals that Arsenal are very calm about Paqueta – firstly, because we feel there’s absolutely no competition to sign him, and secondly, as there’s still over 50 days left before the transfer window shuts.

That’s why Arsenal are in no rush whatsoever to get this deal done.

Do we even need Paqueta?

Lucas Paqueta is a phenomenal player, there’s no question about that.

The Brazilian scored 11 goals and provided seven assists in all competitions last season, and managed 10 and six respectively in the previous campaign. That’s a very good return for someone who mostly plays as an attacking midfielder.

However, Arsenal already have Martin Odegaard and Fabio Vieira in that position. The former is going to be an undisputed starter in almost every game next season, while our new boy will be given plenty of chances to impress as well thanks to the new five substitutes rule.

Unless Arteta wants to sign Paqueta and convert him into a number eight, we really don’t see why Arsenal need another left-footed attacking midfielder in the squad ahead of the new campaign.
