According to The Athletic’s David Ornstein and The Daily Mail, David Luiz has informed Mikel Arteta, Edu and the Arsenal hierarchy today that he will be leaving the club once his contract expires next month.

The Brazilian, labelled as ‘an exceptional player‘ by Pep Guardiola, joined us in the summer of 2019 and has been an integral part of our side. He has had his bad moments in an Arsenal shirt and has received a ton of criticism in the past for some of his mistakes.

However, he has had his highs as well. Luiz played a massive part in helping us win the FA Cup last season. His performances against Manchester City and Chelsea were incredible, and we can only wish him well.

The report claims that Arsenal had not offered Luiz a new contract but even if we did, the Brazilian wouldn’t have agreed to an extension. He had decided that he will leave as a free-agent, and that is what will happen now.

Arsenal have accepted Luiz’s decision and have agreed to bid farewell. Arteta was a big fan of him for his experience and leadership on and off the pitch, and now that he’s gone, the Gunners boss might have to dive into the transfer market for a new centre-half.

It will be interesting to see where Luiz goes next. Reports in the past have linked him with moves to Italy and Portugal, while an experience in MLS or in Saudi Arabia is also extremely likely considering the money involved there.

Should Arsenal replace David Luiz?

Mikel Arteta will have a huge headache now. Keeping hold of Luiz, even if he didn’t play much, would’ve helped so much in terms of nurturing some of the younger players behind the scenes.

Now that he’s gone, there’s no real experience at the back. Rob Holding and Pablo Mari have played many games over the years, but that’s nothing compared to what Luiz offered every time he stepped on the pitch.

With Wiliam Saliba and Dinos Mavropanos coming back, Arsenal will have enough numbers at the back. However, don’t be surprised to see Arteta spend some good money on a top-quality centre-half this summer.
