According to a report from The Athletic, Arsenal are about to shock the world by offering Granit Xhaka a new contract at the club.
It looked certain that the Swiss international would leave Arsenal this summer. Jose Mourinho’s AS Roma were desperate to sign him, he wanted to leave as well and the Gunners were open to his sale if our demands were met.
It really did look like a straightforward deal that should’ve been completed quite comfortably. However, Roma have refused to meet our demands and Edu has decided to keep of hold Xhaka now.
Arsenal to offer Granit Xhaka a new contract
The report claims that Edu has weighed the pros and cons of selling Xhaka this summer. The Arsenal technical director was open to letting the Swiss international leave, but he now believes that it makes more sense to keep hold of him.
Edu feels that selling Xhaka for less than £20 million and reinvesting double that amount on a new central midfielder makes very little sense this summer. As a result, he has decided to keep hold of the £100,000-a-week Swiss star and is set to hand him a new contract.
Xhaka was open to leaving Arsenal this summer, but he isn’t against staying at the Emirates. He has returned to London Colney from his holiday, and the report claims that he is fully focused on the start of the new season.
The Insider’s View:
Most Arsenal fans were really convinced that Xhaka would leave Arsenal this summer. Talks over a new contract really is a shock to all of us, but considering the current market, it’s not a bad idea by any means.
Xhaka had his best campaign in an Arsenal shirt last season. He was one of the best midfielders in Euro 2020 as well, and nobody understands Mikel Arteta’s system better than him in the squad at the moment.

Yes, someone like Manuel Locatelli or Bruno Guimaraes would be a really exciting signing for us, but Xhaka is a terrific midfielder in his own right, and keeping hold of him would be a really smart idea this summer.
