Arsenal legend Ray Parlour has revealed that former Gunner Marc Overmars would be interested in replacing Edu at the Emirates.

The Gunners are receiving criticism from all corners of the footballing world at the moment. Our results this season have been shocking, our recruitment strategy has been questionable, while our ability to sell players has been almost non-existent.

Mikel Arteta is being asked a ton of questions, but Edu deserves a share of the blame too. Parlour has had a go at the Brazilian and has revealed that Overmars has even told him that he wants to come and sort out the mess we’re currently in.

Parlour: Overmars wants to replace Edu

The Romford Pele said about Edu on TalkSport, as quoted by The Daily Star: “Obviously he worked in Brazil, even Marc Overmars – I’ve had a text off him before saying ‘Oh Ray, I need to go back to that club and sort it out.’

“Edu, they’ve gone with Edu. It’s a very important role you have got to play. Recruitment is so important, it’s very, very important for any club. I don’t know what the relationship is like with Mikel Arteta, I have not been around the guys.

“I know Edu as a player, and he’s played in winning teams. He probably knows what they need, but it’s whether they can get them or not. When you’re not in Europe, how do you attract players?

“Because everyone wants to play in the Champions League or the Europa League. It’s very difficult, you sometimes have to pay over the odds, and they probably have done for a few players.”

The Insider’s View:

Edu has pulled off a few decent signings at Arsenal to be fair to him, but the lack of experience at the top level is alarming. Arteta is in his first job as a manager, Edu is the technical director of a European club for the first time ever and Vinai Venkatesham is in his first job as a CEO as well.

Experience is really important in football and our lack of it is causing problems. We’re not saying we should sack Edu right away, but a bit of help for the Brazilian from someone a lot more experienced could change Arsenal’s fortunes.

Overmars, if we decide to bring him in, can only be a replacement to Edu. That is looking unlikely at the moment, but football is a funny game, and anything can happen if our results don’t change in the coming weeks.
