What Wojciech Szczesny said last year about returning to Arsenal

Gazzetta dello Sport surprised many of us earlier today by claiming that Arsenal are looking to bring Wojciech Szczesny back to the club.

The Pole initially left us on loan in 2015, before permanently joining Juventus in 2017. He has been integral to the Old Lady’s success over the last few years, but his time in Turin may just be coming to an end.

Juve are reportedly close to signing Gianluigi Donnarumma as their new number one. That makes life very difficult for Szczesny, who could well decide to move on in search of a first-choice spot elsewhere.

Arsenal have been credited with an interest ahead of the summer window, but will Szczesny really return to the Emirates? He spoke about this on The Lockdown Podcast in April last year.

Szczesny: I still have properties in London, just in case

He said: “I miss them (the players). I miss playing at the Emirates. I think that was something special for me, the quality of the pitch, the fans, the big nights in a north London derby.

“The emotions were quite different because whatever you do in your career, and some of us have gone on to make great things and have made a great career whereas some have maybe made a step back, there’s nothing like playing for the club that you love. The emotion of that is something special.”

Asked if he would ever come back, Szczesny jokingly said: “If you get back into the Champions League, I will (come back). I’m sorry, that was poor from me. I don’t know, I just signed a very long-term deal with Juventus and I’m really happy there.

“But, I still have properties in London, just in case they want me back one day when I have grey hair. I still follow you guys and I see how you’re doing. My good friend (Mikel Arteta) became the manager, so things are really strange, but I really support you guys.”

The Insider’s View:

Do we think that this deal will happen this summer? Absolutely not!

However, if Arteta is really looking for someone who is Arsenal through and through, he won’t find a player who will check that box quite like Szczesny does.

The Pole really does love Arsenal. He showed it during his time here and he has shown it since he has left the club as well. Gooners will surely welcome him back if a deal can be struck, but sadly, it makes no sense at the moment.

The only way Arsenal would even consider bringing him in would be if Bernd Leno decides to leave. Arteta rubbished that concern a few weeks ago by claiming that the German ‘belongs’ at the Emirates. (Read here) That should end all the speculation.
