Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta has had his say on rumours about Bernd Leno leaving the Emirates at the end of this season.

Football London revealed a few weeks ago that the Gunners are looking to offload the German shot-stopper, while The Telegraph claimed last week that he will be sold if a bid of just £15 million arrives this summer.

Leno, labelled as an ‘excellent goalie‘ by Gary Linker, came out and revealed yesterday that he does not want to ‘flee’. He claimed that he still wants to play Champions League football for the Gunners, and confirmed that his sole focus is on Arsenal. (Read here)

Mikel Arteta: Bernd Leno belongs at Arsenal

Arteta has backed Leno’s claims. He told the media today that the German belongs at Arsenal and the speculation surrounding his future has only come up because he will enter the final two years of his contract this summer.

The Spaniard said, as per Arsenal.com: “It’s another one with a contract here that because of the length of his contract, a lot of things will be speculating. He has two years here and he belongs here.”

That should bring an end to all the speculation surrounding Leno’s future.

The German may have made a few mistakes this season, but he is still a sensational goalkeeper. He is among the best in the Premier League, and Arsenal should seriously consider extending his contract beyond 2023.

However, Leno needs someone to keep him on his toes. The German knew this season that there was no way Arteta would drop him. That probably made him unintentionally complacent, which should explain some of his poor mistakes.

A quality backup who will compete for the first choice role could make a huge difference at Arsenal. Leno will then play out of his skin to keep his number one spot – just like he did last season when Emi Martinez was still here.
