Arsenal star Gabriel Martinelli featured for Brazil against the Ivory Coast at the Olympics yesterday, but the youngster couldn’t help his country break the deadlock.
The game ended 0-0, but something Martinelli did after he came on for the last 18 minutes caught Arsenal fans’ eye.
The little Brazilian, as we’ve seen over the last two years, does not give up on the football pitch. He chases every ball, puts his body on the line in every duel and does not pull away from a challenge even though he could hurt himself.
We all love Gabi for that, but he needs to be more careful.
Martinelli rushed in to win the ball in what looked like a lost cause. Ivory Coast’s Eboue Kouassi beat him to it, and his follow-through caused him to clatter into the Arsenal man, who ended up rolling around in pain.
Gabi could’ve really hurt himself there. His commitment and his work ethic on the pitch is second to none, but Mikel Arteta has to tell him to be more careful in moments like this, especially considering his injury problems over the last 12 months.
However, Martinelli’s fearless approach is what makes him the brilliant player he is. Asking him to stop going in for every ball could prove to be detrimental to his play. That’s something nobody wants, but it’s still scary to see him put his body on the line 20 times every game.
Gooners, predictably, are really worried.
