Arsenal showed real character in the dying moments of our game against Crystal Palace last night and Mikel Arteta was delighted with what he saw.
The Gunners now have a chance of finishing in seventh place if results go our way on Sunday. That is not good enough, but considering where we were a few months ago, securing European qualification may well be viewed as a small positive.
Arteta certainly thinks so. The Gunners boss claimed that nobody would’ve even thought that Arsenal had a chance of qualifying for Europe, but his choice of words has annoyed quite a few fans on social media.
He said, as per Arsenal.com: “If somebody were to say to us in November or December that we could be in the position that we’re in to have the chance in the last game to qualify for Europe, we’d have said you’re crazy, but we’ve done it.
“I think what ourselves and the number of points that we’ve managed to get in those months, we have earned the right to be in that position. Now it’s time to deliver on the final day, but unfortunately, it’s not in our hands.”
Arsenal fans are baffled by what Mikel Arteta said last night
Arteta certainly has a point but the way he conveyed it last night hasn’t gone down well at all. The Arsenal boss’ statement almost makes it seem like he had given up on qualifying for Europe through the Premier League back in November.
Yes, Arsenal were in the bottom half of the table at that point, but more than half of the season was still left to be played, and we simply had to believe that we could turn the season around and finish in a respectable position.
To be fair to Arteta, only Manchester City have picked up more points than Arsenal since Christmas day. That clearly shows that we have improved, but it’s still not good enough, and the Gunners boss’ statement last night just added more fuel to the fire.
