Arsenal new boy Albert Sambi Lokonga has been called up to the Belgium squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.
The 21-year-old midfielder joined us from Anderlecht for about £18 million this summer (Goal). Not a lot was known about him, but he impressed fans in pre-season and he has arguably been our best player in each of our first two league games.
Lokonga’s performances have been so good that it has caught Belgium boss Roberto Martinez’s attention. He has now called up the midfielder for De Rode Duivels’ games against Estonia, Czech Republic and Belarus next month.
Lokonga is the future of Arsenal and Belgium
Even though we’ve only seen Lokonga play a handful of times, we can all tell he’s a quality player. His composure on the ball, ability to make the right decisions under pressure and vision to pick out a pass has caught everyone’s eye.
In his two games in the Premier League so far, he has averaged 66.5 touches and maintained an impressive 86% passing accuracy. He also averaged 1 key pass, 1.5 shots, 1.5 interceptions and 1 tackle, which is excellent for a 21-year-old in his first couple of games in England. (SofaScore)
Arteta clearly trusts him and that faith will only increase in the coming weeks and months. He’s definitely the future of Arsenal’s midfield, and he could become a big player for his country as well now.
In a Belgium side flooded with talent in the middle of the park, it will take a while before Lokonga can become a mainstay. However, a few impressive displays next month followed by some more good work at Arsenal could make him a starter for the Red Devils in Qatar next year.
Arsenal fans are absolutely delighted with Lokonga’s call-up. Here’s how a few of them reacted to the news on Twitter…
