How Arsenal’s next season panned out the last time they had three World Cup winners in their squad

Arsenal are proud to have three World Cup winners in the current squad this summer in David Raya, Martin Zubimendi and Mikel Merino.

Both Merino and Zubimendi played in the final while Raya had to sit back and watch Unai Simon keep yet another clean-sheet.

However, it means the Gunners now have three more big-time winners in the ranks, something Mikel Arteta will be delighted with.

Of course, this isn’t the first time Arsenal have had a trio of World Cup winners.

Going back to the 2014/15 season, Arsenal welcomed back Mesut Ozil, Per Mertesacker and Lukas Podolski after Germany won in Brazil.

And interestingly enough, the season that followed proved quite fruitful on and off the field.

Harping back to the 14/15 season, we are still in the Arsene Wenger era and having Ozil, Mertesacker and Podolski in the squad feels like a lifetime ago.

As for the season Arsenal had when the three Germans came back as world champions, it wasn’t bad at all.

The Gunners won The Community Shield by hammering Manchester City at Wembley, as goals from Aaron Ramsey, Santi Cazorla and Olivier Giroud proved enough.

In terms of the overall season, Arsenal ended up in third, behind champions Chelsea by 12 points and just four shy of Man City in second.

However, Arsenal would find success in the FA Cup, as they once again produced at Wembley to stick four past Tim Sherwood’s Aston Villa.

As for the players who joined Arsenal ahead of the campaign, it was very much a mixed bag.

Alexis Sanchez arrived for £40m and proved a solid addition, while Danny Welbeck also signed and did okay through the years.

However, other outlays such as Callum Chambers, Mathieu Debuchy and Gabriel Paulista all flattered to deceive. Furthermore, the departure of Thomas Vermaelen that summer also hit Arsenal hard.

Nevertheless, they still brought home a trophy and while expectations will be that another league title is won this season, history looks kindly on Arsenal when it comes to having World Cup winners.
