Arsenal star Martin Odegaard set a new record as Norway hammered five goals past Gibraltar in their World Cup qualifier at Oslo last night.
Odegaard’s name has been doing the rounds in the media for all the right reasons. His private team talk with his international teammates seems to have worked wonders, and last night’s result just took them to a whole new level.
Norway have looked like a completely different team in this international break. After an impressive draw against the Netherlands and a comfortable victory over Latvia, the Løvene smashed Gibraltar thanks to Odegaard and his boys.
Odegaard sets new international record
Although Odegaard didn’t score a goal or pick up an assist last night, he impressed everyone. His class on the ball and his tremendous range of passing proved to be too much for Gibraltar, who just couldn’t stop him.
In his 90 minutes on the pitch, he had 144 touches of the ball and completed 95 of his 110 attempted passes. He attempted 14 crosses, 12 long balls and created two big chances, but sadly, he couldn’t register an assist. (SofaScore)
The most impressive stat among all is that he managed a staggering 12 key passes last night. That’s the most key passes made by a player in one international match in SofaScore’s entire database, which is a stunning record.
Odegaard rated higher than hat-trick hero Haaland
Everybody’s favourite striker Erling Haaland made the headlines for his hat-trick last night. He was as clinical as he always is, but the Borussia Dortmund star, despite his three goals, was rated as the second-best player on the pitch.
Haaland was given a 9.4 rating, while his strike-partner, Alexander Sorloth, earned a 9.3 out of 10. However, it was Arsenal star Odegaard who topped the list with a stunning 9.7, making him the best player on the pitch. (SofaScore)
Odegaard will now return to North London as Arsenal look to turn things around in the Premier League. If the Norwegian can replicate his performance from last night, we should be able to pick up a comfortable win over Norwich City this weekend.
