‘A £100m talent’ – Arsenal fans cannot believe what they’ve seen from Ethan Nwaneri against PSV

Ethan Nwaneri produced another exceptional performance for Arsenal in their thrashing of PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

Arsenal beat PSV 7-1 in what was a stunning night in the Netherlands for Mikel Arteta’s men.

A brace from Martin Odegaard, and goals from Nwaneri, Jurrien Timber, Mikel Merino, Leandro Trossard and Riccardo Calafiori saw the Gunners put up a record victory in European competition.

Arteta’s team became the first in Champions League history to score seven goals away from home in a knockout game.

The second leg at the Emirates next week should now be nothing but a formality.

Arsenal fans react to Ethan Nwaneri’s performance against PSV

Deployed on the right wing in Bukayo Saka’s absence, Arsenal’s brightest young talent delivered a scintillating display at the Philips Stadion.

Nwaneri joined Jude Bellingham and Phil Foden in the history books by becoming the third English player under the age of 18 to start in a Champions League knockout match.

Netting the second goal for the Gunners by slamming the ball into the roof of the net from Myles Lewis-Skelly’s cut-back, the Hale End graduate was a constant threat throughout.

Arsenal fans took to X to celebrate the showing from the starlet, with one fan writing: “I LOVE Nwaneri’s ‘selfish gene’ …such a key part to being a star. There’s no doubting his creativity and willingness to find others in space. But to have the confidence to back yourself is an entirely different ballgame. Superstar mentality.”

Another simply added: “Ethan Nwaneri is top two U21 footballers in the world. Elite talent.”

Meanwhile, one supporter couldn’t believe what Arsenal have stumbled upon with Nwaneri: “We have genuinely spawned a £100m plus talent in Ethan Nwaneri. What the lad is doing is not normal.”

One fan pointed out: “Nwaneri has scored more open play CL knockout goals than Eden Hazard.”

Another fan went a step further than the initial claim that Nwaneri is worth £100 million, claiming a suitor would have to add an extra £50 million to land him.

They wrote: “Feel like Nwaneri isn’t hyped enough, this is a £150m player already.”

This was a truly sublime performance from Nwaneri, and the data reflects it.

The creative midfielder took four shots, accumulated 0.58 expected goals and managed five touches in the opposition penalty area.

While he was somewhat peripheral at times in possession, only completing six passes throughout his 71 minutes on the pitch, every time the ball entered the final third, he came alive.

There are plenty of areas for him to continue to grow, but there’s no doubt that Arteta has unearthed a superstar in the making.
