Alan Shearer predicts Manchester City to beat Arsenal

Arsenal have a good recent record against Manchester City.

The Gunners are unbeaten against Guardiola’s side in the Premier League since the start of the 2023/24 season, and they need that run to continue now more than ever.

A draw is still a good result for Arsenal as it would keep them six points above Manchester City with five games to go.

However, Shearer thinks there will only be one result at the Etihad – a City win.

He told The Metro: “The whole season effectively comes down to this game. I think it’s huge and the biggest game of the season for both clubs.

“Confidence and momentum are such a big thing, which is why I’m going to say a Man City home win.

“I think the belief they’ll get from beating Arsenal in the Carabao Cup and the performances of the last couple of weeks. I think a draw would be a good result for Arsenal, but I think City might have too much for them.

“Arteta knows there’s been no panic from Pep, has there? It’s always been pretty consistent, and they always come good at this time of the year, and it looks as if they are. They’ve won their first trophy and could even end up getting the treble.

“I just think with the momentum that they’ve got and the confidence that they’ve got, I think they might have too much.

“It’d be really interesting to see what Arsenal do, whether they sort of sit back or try to take the game to City, but I think City might just have too much for them.”

Arsenal should not park the bus vs Manchester City

As we said earlier, a draw is a much better result for Arsenal than it is for Manchester City, but that should not be Arteta’s approach.

The Gunners have the best defence in the Premier League, and they definitely have the quality to shut up shop and not give any chances away.

However, that would be an extremely risky move, as one momentary lapse of concentration would not just cost them the game but also potentially the Premier League title.

Arsenal would not be wrong to be cautious on Sunday, but they cannot play for a draw. Arteta must approach the game like any other – to win it.
