Arsenal are back on top of the Premier League table after their win against Everton.
The Gunners had temporarily lost their place at the summit. Manchester City went on top by beating West Ham before Mikel Arteta’s men took on the Toffees on Saturday.
Viktor Gyokeres’ solitary goal was enough for the North Londoners to pick up all three points, and their two-point gap to City has been restored.
The win at the Hill Dickinson Stadium also means that Arsenal will be on top of the Premier League table on Christmas Day, which gives them an opportunity to end a terrible streak.
A Premier League medal? A new signing? What would you give Mikel Arteta for Christmas and why?
Arsenal can end a 78-year Christmas streak
Being on top of the Premier League table on Christmas Day is normally a good thing, but Arsenal can’t say the same.
The Gunners have been in this position in two of the last three years, but they failed to go all the way and win the title in May.
In fact, in the two previous occasions in the Premier League era when Arsenal were on top at Christmas – 2002/03 and 2007/08 – they didn’t finish as Champions either.
On all four of those occasions, a team from Manchester won the title.
The last time Arsenal won the league after being first in the table on Christmas was all the way back in the 1947/48 season.
It has been a long wait for the Gunners, but they now finally have the chance to end this terrible streak. Opta have claimed that Arsenal are the favourites to win the Premier League this season.
If they do it, it will be the first time in 78 years that they have won the title after leading the table on Christmas.
If you could change one thing at Arsenal right now to guarantee the Premier League title, what would it be and why?
Key stat highlights major Arsenal improvement this season
Arsenal dropped way too many points in the Premier League last season.
The Gunners only lost four games, which was the same as the champions Liverpool, but they drew 14 times. That cost them the title.
In the corresponding fixtures this season, Arsenal have already picked up eight more points, which shows massive improvement.
If they win each of their next five games in the league, that number will go up to 17, which should be enough to bring the title to the Emirates Stadium.
