Arsenal’s 2-0 win over Wolves in their Premier League opener on Saturday afternoon was not entirely comfortable.
Arsenal dominated the first half at the Emirates Stadium, and were 1-0 up with 25 minutes on the clock, as Kai Havertz nodded home from a Bukayo Saka cross.
Saka impressed Arsenal fans against Wolves, and will hog many of the headlines as his goals and assists secured the three points. However, at the other end of the pitch, David Raya also put in a hugely important shift for Mikel Arteta’s side.
The Euro 2024 winner made one exceptional stop in the first half to claw away a header from close range. The Spaniard was busier after the break too, as Wolves showed some fight, before Saka’s strike quashed their resolve.
Not only did Raya make some crucial saves, but he was also assured with the ball at his feet and brought a calming presence to the Gunners’ defensive unit.
Raya now looks established at Arsenal, and the North London club are reaping the rewards of his surging confidence.

Arsenal fans credit David Raya after Wolves win
Many Arsenal fans feel that Raya was able to justify the decision to sign him on a permanent deal this summer, following his loan switch from Brentford last season.
Raya came under fire from fans at times last season, but has now lived up to Arteta’s faith in him.
Witnessing his display against Wolves, many supporters took to X to praise the shot-stopper.
One said: “Raya deniers are awfully quiet these days.”
Another stated: “Raya was quality today. Couple of poor passing decisions but apart from that was great. Always bring such a sense of calmness whilst still being commanding. Confidently claiming crosses to prevent chances and a couple of big saves too to keep us in the game.”
Another added: “Raya well earned clean sheet excellent display man.”
One chipped in with: “David Raya take a bow. A save like that is just as good as scoring a goal at the other end. Ridiculous stop.”
Arsenal have goalkeeper conundrum
Aaron Ramsdale is now languishing on the bench at Arsenal, seeing his value depreciate week by week. However, the Gunners have no viable alternative to provide back up for Raya.
There has been interest in Ramsdale in this transfer window, and the England man is likely keen to leave the Emirates Stadium. Arteta can’t sanction his departure without a replacement already secured though.
Arsenal have been linked with Joan Garcia, who may take Ramsdale’s place as Raya’s understudy.
