Over the years, Newcastle United have certainly proved to be something of a bogey side for Mikel Arteta and Arsenal.
Arsenal lost at St James’ Park in the Premier League earlier this season, and the Gunners have often been unsettled by Newcastle’s boisterous nature, particularly away from home.
But at the Emirates Stadium, Arsenal fans would have been expecting different, hoping for a solid home victory in the first leg of their EFL Cup semi-final.
However, that wasn’t to be the case, and Martin Odegaard’s old teammate Alexander Isak was once again the man to down Arsenal, someone the club would rather be wearing red.

On Odegaard’s part, the Arsenal captain was fairly uninfluential, like most of his teammates in the 2-0 defeat.
And when scrolling through X after the game, it was clear that Arsenal supporters weren’t thrilled with the midfielder’s efforts.
Arsenal fans turn on Martin Odegaard after EFL Cup defeat to Newcastle
Put simply, Arsenal fans seemed to be of the opinion that Odegaard has been somewhat overrated over the past year or so.
The Norway captain struggled to make a clear-cut chance against Newcastle, leading to some pretty bold conclusions.

One fan wrote: “You lot that called Odegaard our best player need to find a new sport.”
Another supporter then claimed that there were so many midfielders in the Premier League that they’d rather have than Odegaard, sharing a small compliment for Declan Rice in the process.
They said: “Dead serious, there’s at least 30 midfielders in the prem that I would rather have than Odegaard
“At least I was seeing Rice driving the team forward in the 2nd half and trying to make something happen – Odegaard legit did NOTHING.
“It’s getting sad at this point.”
Another fan was then frustrated that Odegaard was even mentioned in the same breath as Bukayo Saka, who missed the game owing to injury
They simply shared: “Pure disrespect to put Saka’s name with Odegaard.”
Odegaard shouldn’t be blamed for Arsenal’s transfer woes
Strong verdicts, especially given all that Odegaard has achieved with Arsenal on the pitch over the last 18 months or so.
In truth, the frustration towards the Norwegian should probably be better directed towards Arsenal’s decision-makers, who haven’t signed the attacking quality needed.
Were Isak still playing ahead of Odegaard for example, as they did at Real Sociedad, that could allow the Arsenal midfielder to shine, a better target to find.
It was undoubtedly a frustrating performance, but not one that Odegaard deserves to be solely blamed for.
Arsenal are linked with a striker, someone who could very well leave his club this month, but it remains to be seen whether the Gunners will get any deals over the line.
