Mikel Arteta started Martin Odegaard in midfield against West Ham, and the captain certainly didn’t produce for Arsenal.
The Gunners had a week to prepare for the clash with Hammers, after narrowly beating Leicester City last weekend.
However, they didn’t look well-rested against the East London outfit, delivering a lackluster display at the Emirates.
West Ham ran out 1-0 winners courtesy of Jarrod Bowen’s first-half header, in what is a damaging result for Arsenal in their pursuit of the Premier League title.
Odegaard played the full 90 minutes for the North Londoners, but failed to impact the game in a positive manner, sparking discourse about him online.

Arsenal fans weren’t happy with Martin Odegaard’s display against Leicester City
Struggling for form for some time now, Arsenal fans were hopeful that Odegaard could step up in the absence of the team’s primary forwards.
However, he certainly didn’t manage to do so on Saturday, delivering a meek display that lacked the creative spark we’ve become accustomed to seeing from the player in recent years.
Odegaard’s shooting was diabolical, while his hopeful crosses were inaccurate and weak.
The Arsenal faithful were quick to vent their frustrations about the club captain, taking to X to rant.
One fan wrote, damningly: “I’ve never seen a weaker player than Martin Odegaard, gets bullied every game.”
Another added: “I am very angry at Martin Odegaard, you’re suppose to be the leader and you are playing like that.”
Meanwhile, another supporter took it a step further, writing: “Martin Odegaard. Absolutely atrocious. Barely stood up in any of these games.”
Another simply outlined how poor Odegaard was by listing his stats for the game, before sarcastically positing that he’s ‘the best midfielder in the world’.
One fan took a more extreme view, stating that the 26-year-old should be stripped of the captaincy and replaced with Florian Wirtz.
They wrote: “Martin Odegaard will never ever be a GREAT player. Hides away from the light when his team needs him. Doesn’t grab games by the scruff of the neck and doesn’t have an ounce of leadership in him. Strip him off the armband and give it to Gabriel. If we we’re serious, we’d buy Wirtz.”
Martin Odegaard’s statistics vs West Ham
This was nothing short of an abysmal display from Odegaard, who struggled with West Ham’s physicality and was unusually sloppy in possession.
This was reflected in his stats from the game, which don’t make for pretty reading.
| Odegaard’s Statistics vs West Ham | |
| Minutes Played | 90 |
| Shots | 3 |
| Key Passes | 4 |
| Expected Goals | 0.07 |
| Expected Assists | 0.22 |
| Accurate Passes | 60/70 (86%) |
| Accurate Crosses | 0/6 (0%) |
| Successful Dribbles | 0/1 (0%) |
Perry Groves wants Odegaard to shoot more frequently, and he did so in this game, but with no conviction or accuracy.
While he ultimately created four chances, the Norway international was mostly resorting to spamming hopeful crosses, none of which hit an Arsenal target.
Arsenal need a fully firing Odegaard to play at their best, and they’re so far from seeing this at the moment.
