Arsenal fans have a lot to say about Premier League semi-automated offsides after Kieran Tierney disallowed goal vs Brentford

Arsenal had a goal ruled out for offside by the Premier League’s semi-automated technology against Brentford.

It was announced earlier this month that semi-automated offside technology would be implemented from match week 32 in the Premier League.

With Arsenal’s game against Brentford poised at 0-0 mid-way through the first half, Kieran Tierney rose highest to nod in Ethan Nwaneri’s inch-perfect cross.

The celebrations were cut abruptly short after VAR reviewed the incident with the new technology, and the Scotsman was deemed to be in an offside position.

Arsenal fans react to Premier League’s semi-automated offside technology

With VAR relying on rough lines being drawn by officials in a room at Stockley Park to determine whether someone is offside or not in the past, the automated technology certainly seems like progression.

However, some Arsenal fans were left unconvinced after Tierney’s goal was ruled out.

Most were left confused by the visuals, and as to why they don’t show the call from a side-on angle.

One fan wrote on X: “I don’t understand these semi-automated offside visuals from PL.”

Another added: “Bummer for Tierney. It was a great ball in and finish. Also the VAR graphic angle still sucks but glad to have Semi-Automated Offsides in.”

Meanwhile, one fan posted: “Semi-automated offside technology! In football! You couldn’t make this up – but they did.”

Another supporter wrote: “At least the semi-automated offside is a lot quicker than the normal shambles…”

Another fan took a different outlook, writing: “This semi-automated VAR will finally save EPL”

Semi-Automated technology is a positive for the Premier League

While the Tierney call may have gone against Arsenal on Saturday, ultimately it’ll be a positive addition to the Premier League.

The visuals provided could still add more clarity, but ultimately there’s more likely to be more accurate calls made on offsides with the technology.

Those in the VAR room will no longer have to spend an excessive amount of time drawing lines and zooming into grainy pictures.

Finally, the PGMOL have made a positive addition to the league.
