Bradley Barcola was one of the best players on the pitch as France swept Sweden and Viktor Gyokeres aside 3-0 in the World Cup Round of 32.
Starting on the left with Kylian Mbappe through the middle, Ousmane Dembele on the right and an unplayable Michael Olise at number ten, Barcola was at his fluid, dynamic best.
He scored France’s second goal in fine fashion, latching onto a superb through ball from Olise and finishing high and with power.
Throughout the game, he constantly stretched the Sweden backline, running in behind and creating space for Mbappe with his movement.
That Barcola does not look out of place alongside Mbappe, Dembele and Olise says everything. That is the biggest compliment you can give a forward.
🤔 PICK ONE: Would you rather Arsenal signed Bradley Barcola or Morgan Rogers this summer?
Gary Neville, speaking post-match on ITV, put it simply. “That front four that started there will cause nightmares for every single defender in this tournament, and I don’t know how you stop that. A level above.”
Arsenal had scouts in attendance to watch Barcola, and having seen that, it is easy to understand why.
Arsenal fans react to Bradley Barcola’s dazzling display vs Sweden
The reaction from Arsenal fans online throughout the game says it all. They want Barcola at the carpet.
- “We need to sign Barcola!!!”
- “I need Bradley Barcola at Arsenal man, with or without Rogers. The guy’s magic.”
- “We have seen enough, I speak for everyone when I say we don’t care about Morgan Rogers. Bring Bradley Barcola to Arsenal at any cost!”
- “I’d rather have Barcola… Rogers is another overhyped English prospect.”
- “Barcola and Nusa are the type of wingers we need. Rogers can be the Odegaard replacement, get to work Arsenal.”
Although that won’t be the opinion of everyone, the general consensus right now seems to be Barcola preferred over Morgan Rogers.
The situation is complicated, however. PSG do not need to sell, and they reportedly want more than £116million for Barcola.
And Liverpool’s failed pursuit of Yan Diomande could yet drive that figure even higher.
Barcola also has two years remaining on his contract and has not agreed new terms, which is the one factor that could eventually force PSG’s hand.
Arsenal will still be weighing up whether the fee is justifiable. Against Sweden, Barcola looked like a player who could elevate Mikel Arteta’s attack to a level capable of winning the Champions League.
Whether Andrea Berta can find a way to get the deal done is another matter entirely.
