Arsenal took on Newcastle at St James’s Park in the second leg of the Carabao Cup semi final.

Arsenal trailed Newcastle 2-0 from the first leg at the Emirates Stadium and Mikel Arteta named an unchanged side from their 5-1 thumping of Manchester City.

Alexander Isak proved a handful for William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes and played a huge part in the opener for Jacob Murphy.

Murphy’s goal came just seconds after Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard missed a huge chance to put the Gunners ahead on the night and right back in the tie.

Arsenal fans believe Martin Odegaard’s miss has cost them the Carabao Cup tie

Odegaard saw his right-footed effort slice off the post just seconds before Murphy’s opener. Arsenal fans have been reacting on X as they believe that was the decisive moment in the tie.

One Arsenal fan wrote: “Odegaard doesn’t have a right foot and it is so infuriating, he’s cost us this match with his miss.”

Another Arsenal fan wrote: “We knew we had to take our chances tonight and to not hit the target from ten yards is criminal from Odegaard, so so so poor.”

One Arsenal fan did compliment Odegaard’s overall performance in the game but admitted the miss changed the game, he wrote: “Funny that Odegaard has been our best player but that miss has ultimately changed the game from being 2-1 to 3-0 and game over.”

Odegaard has highlighted he needs to improve in front of goal

Odegaard has criticised his own goalscoring form this season and has vowed to improve before the end of the campaign.

The Arsenal captain has scored just three times in all competitions this season and the Gunners have relied on him contributing goals from midfield in recent seasons.

With likes of Bukayo Saka and Gabriel Jesus already injured and Gabriel Martinelli limping off against Newcastle, Arteta will be looking to his skipper to step up in their absence.

A fit and firing Norwegian in front of goal is what the Arsenal fans are craving and will need if they are to win some silverware this season.
