Ethan Nwaneri impressed many with his Champions League performance against PSV Eindhoven, including those at Hale End.

Aspiring Arsenal academy jewels must be watching Nwaneri with excitement as the 17-year-old continues to go from strength to strength in the first team. 

During Arsenal’s 7-1 thrashing of PSV, the teen made the headlines again, as Nwaneri made Champions League history by simply starting a knockout game. 

The Hale End graduate became the third youngest English player to start a Champions League knockout game, following in the footsteps of Phil Foden and Jude Bellingham.

Max Dowman reacts to Ethan Nwaneri’s display vs PSV Eindhoven

It’s been quite the breakthrough season so far for Nwaneri, who is earning high praise week by week for his contribution to Arsenal’s attack. 

The starlet added to his season tally against PSV, doubling the Gunners’ lead on a night that ended in a six-goal advantage to take into the second leg.

Ian Wright was mesmerised by Nwaneri’s performance, and the Arsenal legend wasn’t the only one, as budding star Max Dowman summed the forward up in one word. 

Commenting on Nwaneri’s post-match Instagram post, the 15-year-old called the fellow Hale End product a ‘Joke’ for how he performed in the Champions League.

Dowman himself is impressing below the surface at Arsenal and will inspired by the highs Nwaneri is experiencing this term, in what could soon be replicated by himself. 

Can Dowman play for the Arsenal first team in 2024/25?

Given the hype that’s already surrounding Dowman, many are eager to see what the 2009-born ace could offer at senior level.

While Arteta is keen to protect the youngster, the Arsenal manager hasn’t been afraid to test players early in their careers in the past, handing Nwaneri his Premier League debut at just 15. 

So, why haven’t we seen any of Dowman this season?

The reason is that the rules prevent the teenager from playing in the Champions League or Premier League due to when he was born, rather than his age in years.

Just like how school years are categorised, being born in December 2009 means that Dowman will have to wait until next season to be eligible to feature at such level.

It’s remarkable to think that so much attention is being paid to a player who is only 15 but, when witnessing what Nwaneri is capable of, there’s no time to waste for some of Hale End’s best.
