Arsenal suffered defeat on match day four of the Champions League against Inter Milan.

Mikel Arteta’s side are in a poor spell of form, with the Gunners’ period of low level performances extending against Inter.

The hosts took the lead just before the interval through a Hakan Calhanoglu penalty, a goal that came with great controversy as Mikel Merino conceded the spot kick.

Istvan Kovacs’ call wasn’t the only source of frustration at the San Siro, as Arsenal looked far from their best once again.

Arsenal player ratings vs Inter Milan

David Raya – 6

Raya was there when required but was unable to save the penalty as he did the last time he was in Italy.

Jurrien Timber – 6.5

Continuous challenge with Denzel Dumfries which made for a thrilling watch.

The Dutchman was lively on the left and attempted to light Martinelli’s spark on numerous occasions.

William Saliba – 6

An expectedly solid defensive display from Saliba although, the Frenchman’s biggest gripe will be missing a strong chance to score.

Gabriel Magalhaes – 6

Gabriel was tested against Inter’s inspired start to the game but fortunately, the Brazilian managed to manoeuvre his way through the fixture after picking up an early booking.

Ben White – 6

In a game that didn’t let Arsenal off the leash to play their favoured style of football, White’s link up with Saka was missing in large parts.

Aside from being starved of his overlapping duties, the fullback had an adequate evening.

Thomas Partey – 5

Partey’s recent spell of admirable form did not continue at the San Siro, as the Ghanaian was exposed numerous times in the middle of the park.

There were moments of good and bad for the 31-year-old, but the imbalance in midfield could not be ignored.

Mikel Merino – 3

It was unfortunately a terrible night for Merino, who not only looked unsettled in midfield but also conceded a penalty.

While the decision was a harsh call, committing the offence summed up a dreary night for the Spaniard, who was hooked at half time.

Leandro Trossard – 4

Trossard frustrated fans against Inter as his poor form continued in the starting XI.

The Belgian’s days in the lineup are surely numbered as Martin Odegaard prepares to return, with his lacklustre display at the San Siro not helping his claim.

Bukayo Saka – 7

Consistently strong deliveries and looked to make something happen every time he was on the ball, led by example with the armband on a difficult night for his club.

Gabriel Martinelli – 4

On a night when Martinelli had to perform to rediscover his spark, the Brazilian was largely absent.

When the winger was on the ball, his decision making was questionable. Another poor showing.

Kai Havertz – 6

Havertz is Arsenal’s target man for good reason however, Arteta’s moving around of the German’s position is tedious.

Substitutes

Gabriel Jesus – 6

In a desperate attempt to rediscover his past quality, Jesus was lively against Inter after being introduced at half time.

The Brazilian was a livewire going forward and attempted to make a difference whenever he could, which is more than can be said about others.

Ethan Nwaneri – N/A

A special night nonetheless for Nwaneri, who made his Champions League debut at the San Siro.

Oleksandr Zinchenko – N/A

Martin Odegaard – N/A

A highly celebrated return for the captain who was restored to the pitch for the Gunners for the first time since late August.
