As Arsenal recorded an impressive 5-1 victory over Crystal Palace on Saturday, a blow came in the form of Bukayo Saka having to go off early.

A Gabriel Jesus brace and goals from Gabriel Martinelli, Kai Havertz, and Declan Rice were enough to secure a comfortable Premier League win for Arsenal

However, in the aftermath of this victory there will be huge concern about the condition of Bukayo Saka after he limped off in the first half at Selhurst Park.

The 23-year-old was replaced by Leandro Trossard, but the Belgian took up a position on the left wing with Martinelli moving across to the right flank.

Jamie Carragher impressed by Gabriel Martinelli

Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher liked what he saw from the Brazilian winger after he shuffled across the pitch to take up Saka’s usual position.

Being on the right wing allowed Martinelli to go on the outside of the full-back and stay on his stronger right foot, taking this route he was able to deliver a number of dangerous crosses into the box.

The 23-year-old also made inroads into the penalty area himself, and his intelligent movement was rewarded late on as he found the back of the net from close range.

When asked on Sky Sports (21/12/2024, 18:53) if he’d been impressed by Martinelli’s efforts, Carragher said: “Certainly on that right side… If Saka misses a few games maybe over this Christmas period, the way he’s [Martinelli] played today will do him the world of good.”

How can Arsenal cope without Bukayo Saka after injury?

After the match, Mikel Arteta could not confirm the seriousness of Saka’s injury

The England international will be scanned and assessed in the coming days. However, Saka was seen on crutches as Arsenal left Selhurst Park, which certainly doesn’t bode well.

This scenario has sparked a debate amongst the Emirates Stadium faithful. Arsenal fans have argued whether a new signing is needed to cope with the prospect of Saka’s potential absence, or if Martinelli can step up in his place.

As far as Carragher is concerned, it would seem, Martinelli has shown enough to be worthy of Arteta’s faith at this time.
