Arsenal and Manchester City played out a dramatic draw at the Etihad Stadium in a fixture that ended 2-2.

The Gunners were agonisingly close to recording their first win at the Etihad since 2015, with John Stones’ last-gasp equaliser forcing the points to be shared.

Arsenal can be proud of their performance, despite there being a lot of noise from the Manchester City camp about the way that Mikel Arteta’s side played.

Defending a 2-1 lead with 10 men in the second half, City players accused Arsenal of playing the dark side of the game, which has sparked debate.

Chris Sutton reacts to John Stones comments at Arsenal

City’s goalscorer was one of several players to express their frustration at the Gunners, as Stones accused Arsenal of playing dirty after the match.

The Englishman’s comments were not well received by Arsenal fans and also some neutrals, as pundit Chris Sutton blasted the 30-year-old’s decision to criticise the visitor’s tactics.

Speaking on the It’s All Kicking Off podcast, Sutton accused Stones of ‘hypocrisy’, saying that every club would play as Arsenal did in that situation.

“What was evident was the time wasting but everybody does it,” Sutton explained.

“Every team does it and then when it goes against them, everybody starts winging and moaning it’s hypocrisy from John Stones.

“Maybe Man City are one of those teams because they’re so superior and don’t have to do it like everybody else but, I think if they were in the same position, down to 10 men [they would do it].”

It’s surprising to hear Arsenal getting so much criticism for their style of play at the Etihad, with the Gunners attempting to defend a 2-1 lead at the home of the champions with just 10 men.

What Man City players have said about Arsenal

There were limited ways that Arteta’s side could play the game without leaving themselves exposed against City however, it seems that Pep Guardiola’s side are unable to understand the approach.

At full-time, Erling Haaland told Arteta to ‘stay humble’ as the striker lost his temper and took aim at Gabriel, the Arsenal boss and 17-year-old Myles Lewis-Skelly.

Haaland was one of four City players to publicly throw their toys out of the pram, as Bernardo Silva unleashed a scathing rant in reaction to his side going four games without beating the Gunners.

The latest City player to take aim at Arsenal in the wake of the draw is Manuel Akanji, who insisted that Arteta’s side only look ‘for drama’, implying that the visitors were happy to settle for a draw.

It’s clear to see that Guardiola’s squad have let Arsenal get under their skin, turning up the heat in the Premier League title race after just five games played.
