Arsenal hammered Fulham on Saturday evening.

The Gunners have been questioned over the past few weeks after their recent dip in form, but they proved all of their doubters wrong here.

Arsenal were incredible against Fulham, and the player who will take most of the plaudits is Viktor Gyokeres.

The striker had his best game in an Arsenal shirt in this match, he scored twice and assisted another, and, rightly so, he will receive a lot of praise for his performance.

However, that said, there is another important sub-plot that developed through this game that also shouldn’t be ignored.

You’re Mikel Arteta: How do you use Myles Lewis-Skelly going forwards?

Myles Lewis-Skelly may have saved his Arsenal career

Myles Lewis-Skelly returned to the starting XI against Fulham here, and there’s an argument to make that he may have changed the course of his career with this performance.

The England international got a chance in midfield after spending most of his senior career so far at left-back.

Lewis-Skelly has wanted to play in midfield for a long time, and he took his chance with both hands here.

The teenager was incredible in the midfield, he brought a sense of energy and tenacity that has been missing in recent weeks as Martin Zubimendi has struggled for form.

Lewis-Skelly’s stats from this game tell the story of how good he was.

Of course, context is also key here.

Fulham aren’t exactly the strongest opposition ever, and Lewis-Skelly’s direct counter-part was Harrison Reed – a player who hadn’t started a Premier League game for nigh on two years.

However, as the old saying goes, you can only beat what is put in front of you, and, make no mistake about it, Lewis-Skelly passed this test with flying colours.

There were rumours Lewis-Skelly could be sold this summer, but now, he could well have a future at the heart of this Arsenal midfield.

This may be remembered as the night Lewis-Skelly’s Arsenal career changed for good.
