Arsenal made a real statement in the Premier League title race by thumping Fulham 3-0 on the weekend.

Myles Lewis-Skelly earned most of the plaudits, with Paul Merson very impressed by the Arsenal teenager.

Lewis-Skelly made only his third league start of the season, but certainly played like a seasoned midfielder.

Speaking on The Rest Is Football YouTube channel, Lineker was very complimentary of Lewis-Skelly and pointed out that he’s even better than Declan Rice at progressing the ball forward.

“I thought Myles Lewis-Skelly came in a midfield position, not like a left back that’s moving in a midfield position, and his first thought is to turn and look forward and quickly,” Lineker stated.

“And I think that really enabled Arsenal to get it forward quicker and obviously it was a bit of a plan… pushed the wingers higher and Saka was getting the ball in time to actually take someone on and I think he made a fundamental difference.

“I think that’s quite interesting because he’s a young player and we’ve known him as a fullback, but in that midfield area, the way that I think he was so positive and looking forward.

“We know what Rice is a different kind of player in the sense that he’s probably at his best when he’s running with the ball.

“But he’s also not really a player that tends to look for forward passes particularly quickly either. So I think he really helped them.”

Lewis-Skelly’s in-game statistics (per Sofascore) against Fulham certainly reflect Lineker’s point, as he made an impressive 27 passes in the opposition half.

Manchester United have been looking at Lewis-Skelly recently, but surely Arsenal chiefs will reject any forthcoming approaches now.
