Arsenal played out a cagey clash with rivals Liverpool in the Premier League, as the two protagonists for this season’s title chase went head-to-head.

The Gunners finished as runners-up to the Reds last season in a campaign that left many frustrated, with injuries and finishing costing them dearly.

After a busy summer for Arsenal, there has been some hope that Mikel Arteta can finally lead his team to glory this time around.

With the first head-to-head between the two teams coming just three games into the new Premier League season, there was plenty on the line.

One moment from Arsenal had left Gary Neville fuming, though, bringing up questions surrounding Arteta’s playing style.

Gary Neville fumes at Arsenal passing out from the back against Liverpool

Many know how this Arsenal team will play under Arteta now, with a steely defence, and patience in attack.

That involves some mixing up of the possession, going short at points and longer at others.

However, one moment saw Arsenal caught in possession as David Raya played a risky pass through the midfield, which was intercepted by Virgil van Dijk for a big chance that was eventually snuffed out.

Neville fumed at the play, though, as he said on Sky Sports: “It has become a disease in a game. Honestly.

“If Declan Rice or anyone had it 50 yards up the pitch, they wouldn’t pass it to Gyokeres on the edge of their own box, but they will do it in their own box; it is incredible.”

It does bring up some questions surrounding Arsenal and the risks they decide to take in certain areas of the pitch.

Arsenal’s chance creation brought into question again after Liverpool clash

There was a sense of deja vu in Arsenal’s clash with Liverpool, in that they looked relatively comfortable and in control, but couldn’t quite take the game by the scruff of the neck with a goal.

There were some mitigating circumstances, with an early injury to William Saliba adding himself to a list that includes Bukayo Saka, Kai Havertz and more.

But, given the depth in the squad and the need to win these types of games, it can’t be used as an excuse.

Arsenal need to find that risk factor in their game again, but in the final third to create the chances they need to win these types of games.

They are more competitive in them than they used to, but it’s still all too safe.
