Arsenal faced Newcastle on Saturday evening in what was a huge game in the title race.

Of course, the current title push is the main headline coming away from the game, but there’s another narrative that is certainly worth keeping track of here.

Indeed, not only were Newcastle Arsenal’s opponents on Saturday, they’re also the home of a number of Arsenal’s summer transfer targets.

Tino Livramento has been linked to Arsenal, while Anthony Gordon is an Arsenal target too.

However, due to injuries, neither player was present for this game.

Sandro Tonali has been linked to Arsenal, and he started this game in what well could have been a summer audition.

How did Sandro Tonali perform against Arsenal?

All in all, this wasn’t the greatest performance of Sandro Tonali’s career.

The Italian didn’t exactly stand out against what could be his future employers, but there were some bright moments.

Tonali made a great tackle in the 22nd minute to send Newcastle on a counter-attack, in a passage that was reminiscent of Declan Rice.

Again in the 26th minute, Tonali made an important clearance as Arsenal were building on the edge of the area.

Then, later in the half, Tonali almost caught David Raya out with a long-range effort, showcasing his ability to shoot from range.

Meanwhile, in the second half, Tonali turned into more of a playmaker, looking to craft chances from deep – albeit to no avail.

The Italian’s stats from this game make for some interesting reading.

Tonali wasn’t incredible against Arsenal, but he did showcase what he can do.

Either way, Andrea Berta’s mind probably hasn’t been changed on Tonali after this match – he didn’t stamp himself as a ‘must sign’ player, nor did he suggest that he’s one Arsenal should avoid this summer either.

Arsenal may well be looking to invest in the summer transfer window, and it will be interesting to see if or how Tonali features in their recruitment plans.
