How Viktor Gyokeres’ shooting compares to other Premier League strikers after Wolves draw

Add as preferred source on Google

Viktor Gyokeres’ lack of shots on target in the Premier League makes for terrible reading after his £64m transfer to Arsenal.

Gyokeres stood out against Wolves for the wrong reasons, as when the Gunners needed a reliable goalscorer, the Swede was nowhere to be seen.

Sometimes, it’s incomprehensible that the summer signing scored 54 domestic goals last season, as at Arsenal, he’s way off the mark, and the statistics prove it.

In Arsenal’s draw against Wolves, Gyokeres made it to his 15th Premier League game this season without registering a single shot on target, and it sent a glaring message to Mikel Arteta.

Viktor Gyokeres’ shots on target in the Premier League compared to other strikers

The striker that Arsenal paid £64m to sign in the summer transfer window has failed to record a shot on target in 60% of his Premier League appearances this season.

The numbers are punishing, and a brutal informant to Arteta and Andrea Berta that their summer recruitment was wrong.

When delving deeper into how Gyokeres is performing in the Premier League, the results are staggering, as he’s being left behind by the top-level strikers in the league.

In fact, it’s not even the ‘top-level’ strikers who are outperforming Gyokeres, as the majority are.

14 shots on target from 25 Premier League appearances is simply not good enough, and when compared to Gyokeres’ stats at Sporting CP last season, it’s clear that the 27-year-old just isn’t at the Premier League’s level.

In the 2024/25 Liga Portugal, Gyokeres averaged 2.4 shots on target per game, a figure that shrinks spectacularly to 0.6 for Arsenal in the Premier League, as per Sofascore.

Benjamin Sesko and Viktor Gyokeres comparison is bad news for Andrea Berta

Transfer mistakes happen, but it has to be said that the warning signs were there with Gyokeres, given that he hadn’t played in a league equivalent to the Premier League.

Questions need to be asked of Berta’s decision to favour Gyokeres over other targets, particularly now that the numbers show how much Benjamin Sesko is outperforming the Swede.

Sesko might not be a seasoned goalscorer at Manchester United, but he’s offering the Red Devils a considerable amount more than Gyokeres is at Arsenal.

The Slovenian has recorded nine more shots on target than the Arsenal striker this season, despite playing 552 minutes less.

It’s not a good look for Gyokeres, or for Arsenal, who need to recruit a striker once again in the summer.
