Kai Havertz just equalled the stunning feat of one 132-goal former Arsenal star against Southampton

Kai Havertz played an instrumental role in Arsenal’s 3-1 win over Southampton on Saturday afternoon. 

Arsenal had to mount a comeback to claim all three points in their Premier League clash with Southampton. 

Mikel Arteta’s side dominated the first half against the Saints in terms of possession and territory, but could not force a breakthrough. After the break, the visitors took an unexpected lead when Cameron Archer’s effort found the bottom corner. 

However, the North London outfit levelled things up moments later after Bukayo Saka set up Kai Havertz to fire beyond Aaron Ramsdale. 

Saka was a creative force for Arsenal in this match, but the German striker still had plenty to do after receiving the ball from the Hale End academy graduate. The former Chelsea forward shimmied into space and produced an inch-perfect finish to crash the ball into the back of the net.

Kai Havertz draws level with Arsenal icon Robin van Persie

Havertz maintained his remarkable home record against Southampton. Prior to this match, he had scored in the Gunners’ last six outings at the Emirates Stadium, a feat previously matched by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Emmanuel Adebayor. 

However, with his goal against the south coast club, Havertz was able make it seven consecutive appearances on Arsenal’s own patch in which he has found the back of the net, a record that only Robin van Persie could claim before today. 

The Dutch striker scored 132 goals in 278 games for Arsenal, across all competitions, between 2004 and 2012, before making his controversial move to Manchester United.

Many Arsenal fans on X were quick to show their appreciations for Havertz after this match.

One said: “Gameweek 7 last season was Bournemouth away when we gave Havertz a sympathy penalty and he seemed almost ashamed to celebrate it. Gameweek 7 this season he grabs the game by the scruff of the neck to turn it around. Completely different player.”

Another claimed: “No matter how much Chelsea try gaslight everyone about Kai Havertz we will give him his flowers Been absolutely incredible for the last 6 months. Becoming one of the most reliable players in the world. Incredible involvement.”
